To Cherish a Classic

Have you ever bought a piece of clothing knowing that you would have and use it for the rest of your life?

Cloudy

When I bought this coat, probably 10 years ago, I knew that it would serve me well for years to come.  Of course, that is assuming I don't lose it (which I'm prone to doing) or massively change sizes (which is something I'm not prone to doing) or spill something on it (which is something that I don't do all that often - but may have just TOTALLY jinxed myself by typing that).

The cut and color are classic.

It's lightweight and I didn't spend a fortune on it so I'm not afraid to really WEAR it.

This post was originally intended to be about something completely different.  But when it started raining this morning as I walked out the door to shoot pictures, I instinctively grabbed the trusty trench.

Turns out I'm pretty glad that I did because not only did it keep me warm and dry, it was the perfect accessory for this otherwise basic outfit. Trench coat, you're my hero.

So back to my original question...
Have you ever bought a piece of clothing knowing that you would have and use it for the rest of your life?

Yep. And I've lost a few of those too. I had this blue plaid shirt that I wore all throughout college--I even have pics of me in it on our honeymoon. And yep, it's lost forever! I have managed to keep up with a red padded vest that I wear everywhere. I bought it 11 years ago in an underground market in China for the equivalent of $5.

Oh man, I need something like that. I can out SO much effort into an outfit and then feel defeated when I realize I don't have a coat/jacket that compliments it. Sometimes it comes down to looking cute OR being warm. I need a cute trench as a go-to...

I have my eye out currently for the perfect trench coat so let me know if you see any! My "it's a classic" possession is my Burberry purse.

Do a trusty pair of Chuck Taylor's count? I've had a pair for the last eight years and they're still going strong. I also have a gorgeous Italian silk scarf that I purchased on a trip to Italy years ago that is my go to piece when I want to feel chic! I've never been able to pull off a trench, though. Must be that I feel I'm too short to wear one. I do not want to look like Columbo! Remember him? :)

You look adorable in this outfit and I am coveting that trench. I'm still on the hunt for the perfect trench. I'm a sucker for my Isotoner gloves that I've had since I was 12 and my mom got them for me in Boston and threatened me that if she was going to pay that much for a pair of gloves, I had better not lose them. Seventeen years later, I guess her threat is still hanging over me because I have them and love them! :-)

Cute! I recently bought a nice leather belt that I knew I could wear as long as it would hold up. When I finally decide to invest in a pair of Fryes I'm hoping I'll be able to have them forever!

I absolutely love those boots! I don't have anything that I've had in my closet for an extended period of time b/c I lose everything aaand I get into these moods where I want to toss everything. It's a bad habit.

Yes and no. I've bought many a piece of clothing I THOUGHT I would use the rest of my life... :-/ Wah wah...
Good thing you've got that fancy head on your shoulders and are able to actually invest in classic pieces.

YES! The first thing that comes to mind is my pair of Guess jeans, the best-fitting jeans I have ever come across. Now, of course, jeans are prone to becoming too small in a way that a trenchcoat isn't, and if I ever have a baby, I'll have to do some major work to fit into them again. Even if I gain weight and never wear them again, I can't imagine ever getting rid of those babies.

This trench is simply perfect. I'm glad you found such a staple and have given it all the love it deserves!
